Academic pinheads. MBA professors who've spent their careers in classrooms theorizing about business instead of actually running one. They can diagram a competitive matrix on a whiteboard. They couldn't sell water in a desert.
Corporate refugees. Middle managers who got downsized from Fortune 500 companies and now "consult" for small businesses. They'll teach you the same bureaucratic thinking that made their former employers slow, bloated, and vulnerable.
And my personal favorite: the 28-year-old "marketing gurus." These kids have spent more time perfecting their Instagram aesthetic than they've spent in actual business trenches. They've never made payroll. Never navigated a recession. Never had to fire someone or face a lawsuit or survive a market collapse. But they'll happily sell you a $997 course on "crushing it."
These are the people telling you to "compete."
These are the people keeping you trapped.
Here's something that's going to make you angry once you understand it:
There's a reason nobody teaches positioning.
It requires thinking. Real thinking. Strategic thinking. The kind of thinking that can't be reduced to a checklist or a template.
It requires patience. Positioning isn't built in a "5-Day Challenge." It's not a "funnel hack." It can't be automated or outsourced to a virtual assistant.
And here's the real problem: It can't be easily packaged and sold.
The marketing industrial complex (the gurus, the agencies, the course creators, the software companies) they need you to believe that the answer is always MORE.

Because "more" can be sold. "More" has a price tag.

Positioning solves the problem. And that's bad for their business model.
So they don't teach it. They don't talk about it. And most of them don't even understand it.

Let me tell you what this is really costing you.
It's not just money, though it IS costing you money. Every customer you lose to a competitor who isn't as good as you. Every discount you give because you can't justify your prices. Every proposal that gets shopped around and beaten on price.
But the real cost is bigger than money.
It's costing you your autonomy.
When you're invisible and commoditized, you don't get to choose your customers. THEY choose you — and only if you're the cheapest option. You're at the mercy of the market. You take what you can get. You say yes to projects you should say no to. You work with people you don't like because you can't afford to turn them away.

They compare you. They shop you. They squeeze you on price. They ghost you after proposals. They choose your competitor (the one who does half the quality work) because they were cheaper or flashier or just happened to show up at the right time.
It's maddening. It's demoralizing. And it doesn't have to be this way.
There IS a way out.
Pay close attention. This is the most important thing I'm going to tell you.
There are only two ways to compete in business. Only two. Everything else is a variation of one of these two paths.
This is the default path. The path 98% of businesses are on. You look at what your competitors charge, and you try to be a little cheaper. Or a little better for the same price. Or you offer more for less. You compete on the same terms as everyone else, just harder, faster, more aggressively.
This is the race to the bottom. And it only ends one way: with you exhausted, broke, and wondering where it all went wrong.
This is the path almost nobody talks about. Instead of trying to be BETTER than your competitors, you make yourself INCOMPARABLE to them. You occupy a position in the market where comparison doesn't even make sense.
You're not a better apple. You're the only orange in a market full of apples.
And when you're the only orange, nobody asks "Why are you more expensive than the apples?" The question doesn't even occur to them.

A "Category of One" business doesn't compete.
It doesn't get compared.
It doesn't fight for attention in a crowded marketplace.
Instead, it occupies a position where it is the ONLY logical choice for a specific type of customer.
Not the best choice. Not the preferred choice. The ONLY choice.
Think about that for a moment.
What would your business look like if your ideal customers saw you as the only option that made sense? If they weren't comparing you to three other proposals? If they weren't shopping your quote around? If price wasn't even part of the conversation?
That's what Category of One positioning creates.
Michael McLean, a business owner who implemented these principles, put it perfectly:
"Dan Kennedy taught me never to let the market compare apples to apples. When your competitors sell apples and you sell oranges, price comparison dies instantly. That single principle changed everything."
Read that again: Price comparison dies instantly.
Not "gets reduced." Not "becomes less important." It DIES. It ceases to exist. Because you're no longer playing the same game as everyone else.
Let me show you what this looks like in the real world.

No. It isn't.
A physical therapist was seeing 80 patients a week, working 10-12 hours a day, treating patients personally at commodity rates. After implementing Category of One positioning, he scaled to 500 patients a week — not by working harder, but by repositioning himself as the authority in his market. Same skills. Same services. Completely different position. Completely different income.
A high-end jeweler couldn't move inventory despite heavy discounting. He was competing with every other jewelry store on price — and losing. After applying these principles, his sales increased 312% in three months. With NO discounting. The same products, at higher prices, flying off the shelves. The only thing that changed was how he positioned them.

So how do you actually DO this? How do you escape the commodity trap and become a Category of One?
It starts with answering one question.
One question that 98% of business owners have never seriously considered. One question that — once you can answer it clearly — transforms everything about how you market, how you sell, and how much you charge.
The question is simple. But don't let that fool you. Most business owners stumble through it. They fumble. They give vague answers about "quality" and "customer service" and "years of experience."
None of which actually differentiates them.
The question is this:
"Why should I, your perfect prospect, choose to do business with you... over every other option available to me... including your direct competitors, doing it myself, or doing nothing at all?"
Can you answer that?
Can you answer it in a way that makes your prospect say: "Of COURSE I should choose you — there's no other option that makes sense"?
If you can't (if you stumble, if you give a generic answer, if you sound like everyone else) you don't have a positioning problem.
You don't have a business. You have a commodity.
But if you CAN answer that question... if you can answer it with clarity and conviction and specificity... everything changes.
And that's exactly what I'm going to teach you how to do.
I ended the last section with a question. The most important question in business. And I don't want you to gloss over it — so we're going to sit in it for a moment.
Here it is again:
"Why should I, your perfect prospect, choose to do business with you... over every other option available to me... including your direct competitors, doing it myself, or doing nothing at all?"

Read it again. Slowly.
This question is the entire game. Your ability to answer it (clearly, compellingly, in a way that makes comparison irrelevant) determines everything.
Your prices. Your profit margins. Your stress levels. Your freedom. Whether you spend your career chasing customers or attracting them. Whether you build a business that serves you or one that enslaves you.
Everything hinges on this question.
And yet, almost nobody can answer it.
When I ask business owners this question, I get the same tired answers over and over again.
So does everyone else. At least, that's what they claim. Your prospects have heard "quality" from every competitor in your market. It means nothing. It differentiates nothing.
Again, everyone says this. Have you ever seen a business advertise "mediocre customer service"? Of course not. It's table stakes, not differentiation.
And? Your competitor has been in business for 25. Or 10. Does anyone actually choose a provider based on how long they've existed? Longevity is not a reason to buy. It's barely a reason to consider.
I'm sure you do. But "caring" isn't a competitive advantage. It's the minimum expectation. And your prospects can't verify it until AFTER they've bought from you — which means it does nothing to help them choose you in the first place.
Says who? You? That's not evidence. That's self-congratulation. And your competitors are saying the exact same thing.
Every single one of those answers has the same problem:
They're what everyone else is already saying.
When you sound like everyone else, you ARE everyone else, at least in your prospect's mind. You've given them no way to distinguish you from the other options. No reason to choose you specifically. No escape from the apples-to-apples comparison that leads straight to price shopping.
These answers don't make you the obvious choice.
They make you another choice.
And "another choice" is just a nice way of saying "commodity."
A real answer to this question does something different.
It doesn't just describe what you do. It doesn't list features or make vague claims about quality.
A real answer makes comparison impossible.
It positions you so specifically, so uniquely, so precisely for a particular type of customer with a particular type of problem... that comparing you to your competitors doesn't even make sense.
You're not a better option. You're a DIFFERENT option. The only option that fits.
Remember what Michael McLean said?
"When your competitors sell apples and you sell oranges, price comparison dies instantly."
THAT'S what a real answer does. It turns you into an orange in a market full of apples.
Your competitors are still competing with each other. Still fighting over the same scraps. Still racing to the bottom on price.
And you're over here — in your own category — serving customers who sought YOU out specifically because you're the only one who does what you do, the way you do it, for people like them.
Here's how you know if you have a real answer:
If your prospect hears your answer and says, "Of COURSE I should choose you — there's no other option that makes sense"... you pass.
If they hear your answer and say, "Okay, but how do you compare to [competitor]?"... you fail.
It's that simple.
The first response means you've escaped comparison. You've become a Category of One. You've positioned yourself as the only logical choice.
The second response means you're still stuck in the commodity trap. Still being compared. Still fighting for attention in a crowded market where everyone looks the same.
Most business owners fail this test.
Not because they're bad at what they do. Not because their businesses aren't valuable. But because nobody ever taught them how to answer the question.
They were taught tactics. Funnels. Ads. Social media strategies. "Content marketing." All the surface-level stuff that doesn't matter if your positioning is broken.
Nobody taught them the ONE thing that actually determines whether they struggle or thrive.
Until now.
